At Wilderness Chaplains, we are committed to enhancing wilderness crisis care by connecting local chaplains with Search and Rescue (SAR) teams. Our mission is to provide essential training to all first responders, ensuring they have the support needed in remote environments

Our Story:

Wilderness Chaplains was founded out of tragedy, community resilience, and a clear gap in backcountry care. On August 14, 2018, our mountaineering community suffered a heartbreaking loss when climber Stephen Kornbluth died in an accident. In the wake of his loss, we realized a difficult truth: traditional support systems aren't always equipped for the outdoor community. Very few crisis counselors or chaplains understand the unique culture, risks, and language of backcountry emergencies.

Stephen’s loss made it clear that while urban first responders have dedicated mental health networks, our wilderness responders—both professionals and civilian volunteers—are often left to carry the emotional weight of a crisis alone. We realized we needed a bridge. We needed professionals who were trained in crisis care, but who also understood the realities of the backcountry.

Wilderness Chaplains was formed to fill that void. By connecting local chaplains with Search and Rescue (SAR) teams and providing specialized training to outdoor responders, we bring essential resources and psychological support straight to the front lines of the wild. We are here to ensure that the people who rescue others have the care they need to stay resilient.

Our Mission:

To strengthen wilderness crisis care by connecting local chaplains with Search and Rescue (SAR) teams and delivering specialized training to the first responder community.

Our Vision:

A future where every professional, volunteer, and citizen first responder has immediate, seamless access to compassionate crisis care and the resources necessary to maintain resilience while working and recreating in the great outdoors.

Our Framework for Impact

"When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

-Fred Rogers
