Bridging the Gap: Connecting Care and Community
When a crisis occurs in the backcountry, the focus is rightfully on the physical rescue. But there is always a human toll—affecting families waiting at the trailhead, subjects experiencing trauma, and responders pushing themselves to the limit.
Traditional care providers rarely understand the unique culture or remote realities of wilderness operations. Wilderness Chaplains bridges this gap.
While our long-term roadmap includes direct field deployments, our focus today is on building the foundational network. We act as a connector and educator—bringing together chaplains, first responders, and outdoor communities to ensure no one carries the weight of a backcountry crisis alone.
Breaking Down Barriers:
What is a Wilderness Chaplain?
One of our primary goals is educating agencies on what modern chaplaincy actually means in the field. Our network provides nondenominational spiritual and emotional first response.
We do not proselytize, and our work is not overtly religious. Instead, we provide universal crisis care, psychological safety, and emotional anchoring tailored specifically to the unique, diverse culture of the outdoor community.

How We Bridge the Gap Today
1
Supporting Chaplains to Expand Their Jurisdiction
Many excellent chaplains serve beautifully within urban police and fire departments but want to expand their jurisdiction to include the wild spaces in their regions. We help active chaplains build a bridge to their local volunteer and professional backcountry teams by providing:
-
Strategic introductions to regional wilderness response leadership.
-
Targeted talking points and advocacy tools to help chaplains pitch expanded wilderness coverage within their existing agencies.
-
Guidance on navigating the cultural transition from traditional urban first responder agencies to outdoor rescue environments.
2
Strategizing and Helping Responders Establish Crisis Resources
Finding emotional or psychological support can be daunting for leadership. We work directly with professional, volunteer, and civilian first responder organizations to help them identify, navigate, and connect with chaplaincy and crisis intervention resources right in their own backyard.
-
We help agencies assess their specific cultural needs and design creative strategies to establish their own internal or community-based support resources.
-
If local resources are unavailable or limited, we strategize with leadership to share and develop larger-scale, regional ideas to ensure their teams are never left without an anchor.
3
Cultivating the Wilderness Chaplain Community
True resilience is built through connection. We host monthly information, mentoring, and coaching sessions designed to bring like-minded folks together from all sides of the industry. These sessions are an open forum for:
-
Traditional chaplains wanting to learn backcountry literacy.
-
First responders, SAR members, outdoor industry leaders, and recreationalists looking to understand crisis care.
-
Peer-to-peer mentoring and collaborative problem-solving.
